It was at least the sixth time in the last eight years that a station chief in the C.I.A.'s Latin American division had been removed from his post, current and former intelligence officials said. Since 1987, station chiefs in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Peru, Venezuela and Jamaica have been accused, respectively, of lying to superiors, sexual harassment, threatening underlings at gunpoint, a counternarcotics mix-up in which a ton of cocaine was accidently shipped into the United States, and sloppy bookkeeping involving about $1 million in Government funds, they said.

A station chief in Cyprus was returned to this country after it was discovered that he had stolen at least one valuable religious icon from a church he had illegally entered, the sources said. In another case, the chief of station in Peru was reassigned after he threatened his staff with a pistol.
